This CD of solo flute compositions has proved very popular and several tracks have been played on ABC FM, Classic 'Breakfast with Clive'. Nine of the solos were composed for Fireside Recitals at Pirra Arts Centre in 1996. White Faced Heron and Birds in the Garden, poetry by Keith Harrison are from the Pirra Birds'  Suite. It also includes, The Pied Piper, Romance and Sea Picture for a Sculptor, written to celebrate the unveiling of a sculpture by the late Jeffrey Wilkinson black bartop.png

I have put this CD together in memory of my dear friend, colleague and oftimes musical partner, the late Dr Peter Clinch. It is selected from the many working tapes we made on those wonderful occasions when we escaped to the studio to be our musical selves. I know that Peter would agree with my dedicating this set of improvisations to our splendid graduates, who now carry forward the values we embraced in the Music Department of Melbourne State College.
I was a little apprehensive the first time Peter suggested we try some improvisation together, but our musical rapport was immediate. We seemed to move as one person, making changes at the very same instant. As we listened back to tapes our constant question was, "How did we do that?" Many studio sessions were preparations for live performances. One or two tracks are actual concert recordings. A number of tapes could not be included due to unacceptable noise coming from tape-loop devices. Track 1 is from our very first session

Bob the swagman of 'The Old Bark Hut' comes alive and tells his unique story, his encounters with romance, how he deals with loves lost and how he ends up in the bark hut. He recalls how he was taught the piccolo by the old shearer with the thin bony hands. He plays a couple of tunes before sharing with us his favourite colonial ballads, picked up on the road, like most of the other little trappings of his life black barblack bartop.png
cd008  CD008
Here are twenty seven songs of the sea, beginning with traditional shanties, then to songs of piracy, battles at sea, whaling, the sailor on land, songs of sailor's loves from around the world and ending with an original song about the restoration of a 'couta' boat and a song about a famous Tasmanian lager. With hornpipes for piccolo, solos for tin whistles, crumhorn and bass recorder, guitar accompaniments and the piping of the bosun's whistle, here is nostalgia for all lovers of the sea black bartop.png

Five traditional sea songs, requested at the Goolwa Wooden Boat Festival, in 2003, set the salty scene for this collection. Then the 'Old Salt' goes inland with an original song to an anonymous poem, How the Sailor Rode the Brumby. Songs of the steamers and the river trade follow. There are reconstructions of lost songs, songs composed to fill the gaps and some from the old days. Highlights are Derelicts of the Murray an original tune to Alice Lapthorne's wonderful poem and an original song about the restoration of a Coorong dory. Tin whistles, piccolo, flute, guitar, a jig and a reel add to the jollity black bartop.png
