At the moment I don't have much on James Jackson, other than he was a store keeper. I think he was probably a convict. There is a James Jackson listed in the 1811 General Muster. There are a number of Jackson convicts in Tasmania but there is not a lot of detail to go on.
James married Catherine Bannister in Hobart in 17-6-1829. Catherine (Kitty) was sentenced for Life on the 5-4-1827 for larceny from a person. She came out on the "Sovereign", arriving in Hobart Town, 20-11-1827. She was 20 years old and the report of the ship's Surgeon shows her to be a hard nut, always in trouble. It wasn't till she received her Ticket of Leave, 19-2-1836, that she faded from the view of the Law. Catherine's Conditional Pardon was applied for 20-9-1837 and approved 31-1-1840. (As yet I have not got her Indent, not available for some reason) Catherine Jackson died in Hobart 1-6-1874.
According to the Ancestral File information I have Catherine married William Dann 27-8-1847 in Pontville TAS so I assume that James had died before then! She had two sons and a daughter to Dann.
The book "Notorious Strumpets and Dangerous Women. Convict Women in Van Dieman's Land 1803 - 1829" by Phillip Tardif, mentions Catherine Bannister (no 1239)
When Rachel married John Dowdle, she was supposed to have lost her first husband in 1862 in Tasmania. However there is no record of that marriage or his death in Tasmania.
The first five of her children were not registered as Dowdle's although he raised them. I have worked out from her death certificate which children are hers in the indexes. There are thirteen children in the Victorian BDMs. that could be hers. (mother is Rachel Jane Jackson etc) The birth certificate of her son Frederick Warmonton Dowdle shows that she could read and write.
