About the Town of Dimboola

Situated on the banks of the Wimmera River, Dimboola is situated 334 km north-west of
Melbourne and 33 km north-west of Horsham in Victoria, Australia. It is a peaceful town
of around 1600 residents located in the Wimmera wheat-belt.

Dimboola was originally known as "Nine Creeks", due to the many tributaries of the
Wimmera River. Its name was later changed to Dimboola, meaning 'Land of figs', named
after the town Dimbula in Sri Lanka (Ceylon).
It was first settled in the mid 1800s by pioneers of German, Scottish and English descent.
At the time it boasted a jewellery store, a Chinese-owned market garden, a timber
merchant, two hotels, a dispensary store and a general store. A state school opened in
1865 and a brick shire hall was completed in 1877. A flour mill was also established and
the local newspaper, the Dimboola Banner, went into print in 1879. Although the stores
have changed, many of the original shop fronts and historical buildings still remain.
Each year it is home to the Wimmera German Festival (April), the Dimboola Agricultural
Show (October), and the annual rowing regatta (November). Every other day the town
welcomes you to discover its historic buildings, antique shops and natural scenery that
includes the Wimmera River and the Little Desert.
And of course, its other claim to fame is the play Dimboola.
